The Invention of Natives and Migrants | Nandita Sharma
On this episode, my guest is Nandita Sharma, an activist and scholar whose research is shaped by the social movements she is active in, including No Borders movements and those struggling for the planetary commons. She is the author of Home Economics: Nationalism and the Making of ‘Migrant Workers’ in Canada (University of Toronto Press, 2006) and Home Rule: National Sovereignty and the Separation of Natives and Migrants (Duke University Press, 2020). She is a Professor in the Sociology Department at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa, and received her Ph.D. in Sociology at the University of Toronto.
"This way we look across a room full of people, or at an airport, and we're nationalizing everyone: 'This is someone from here, and this is someone from there.' An everyday form of nationalism that absolutely props up the fascists in the world." - Nandita Sharma
